Step 2. Which car sharing model would be best for your area?

Once you’ve assessed the demand and you’ve decided to go ahead with a scheme, you should consider which car sharing model would work best in your area.

  1. Car club run by a national car club operator. There are two national car club operators in Scotland: Co Wheels and Enterprise Car Club. These operators own the cars and run all operational aspects of the scheme, such as bookings, billing and insurance. The community could be involved in marketing to help promote the scheme, but the running of the scheme would be managed by the national operator. They tend to operate in areas with high density, but they may be interested in locating a car in other areas. To attract these operators to your area, you may need to financially subside the scheme (especially for the first 12 months, until the scheme is properly established). CoMoUK can provide contact details for the operators who will be able to provide you with more information.
  2. A community run scheme. A community can choose to manage and run their own scheme. This model can be operated in several ways. See step 3 for how to operate your car club as a community group.
